SEMI-PRECIOUS STONE JEWELRY

Although some gemstones have been classified during different time periods as "precious stones" or as "semi-precious stones", most people today consider diamond, emerald, ruby, and sapphire to be the most valuable and therefore to belong to the "precious" classification. Natural pearls and opal are also often considered to be members of this group, although the pearl is not really a "stone" at all.

The rest of the stones that make up the jeweler's palette are considered "semi-precious" and come in a wide variety of colors and textures. Some, like aquamarine, for instance, even belong to the same mineral family as one of the precious stones.

SMOKEY QUARTZ NECKLACE

This lovely necklace features two semi-precious stones in the quartz family, smoky quartz (once falsely known as smoky topaz, although topaz has a completely different chemical composition) and clear crystal quartz.  These stones are combined with sterling silver beads and chain to create a look that can easily transition from daytime to evening wear. POTPOURRI PEARLS

These are not your grandma's pearls! Our "potpourri pearls" feature a randomized mix of sizes, shapes, and colors for a fresh new look. The pearls are hand strung on silk for the best "drape".  I've tried several types of beading threads, but there's just nothing to compare with real silk.  It is knotted between each pearl so that they will not rub together and wear away the nacre that makes pearls so beautiful.  (It's also a help if you should ever break the jewelry as you're unlikely to lose many pearls.

HEMATITE NECKLACE

One of the best things about this design is that this jewelry looks good on men too.  Hematite is basically an iron oxide and thus can be magnetized; however this necklace is made of the regular non-magnetized semi-precious stone.

Here's a bit of information for those of you who are interested in semi-precious stone lore: in ancient times hematite was worn as an amulet to prevent bleeding.
